Both brand new, the GMC is $26K and the JK Wrangler is $23K. Both manual, but the GMC has AC/Android Auto/Carplay where as the JK is 4WD, but base as hell (obviously).
I can see the GMC being a better all rounder, but the JK being a better long term car (which is what I want).
Not actually buying anything....for a bit.
The GMC is 4cyl/6MT/RWD
The Jeep is 4WD/6MT with a cloth top/no air conditioning

Four-cylinder and RWD, too. The Android Auto is mostly useless, but my dad loves the truck so far. Over 10,000 miles and no problems (that sounds negative, but it’s off to a great start).

Jeep all the way. 4WD, capable, cheaper, holds its value insanely well. Plus, you already have a pickup truck!

The GMC will deprecate, but the Wranger, inexplicably, won’t.

I mean, I would want android auto, given how much I drive. But, I also am a vehicular luddite

4X4 Wrangler. My faith in reviews dropped even more after experiencing our Colorado and remembering publications saying it was better than the Tacoma. It is better, if you are blind, and prefer things being worse.

JK Wrangler because that’s the first vehicle I ever had fun driving.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:27 |

The truck is far less likely to fall apart long term, because it's not made by FCA.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:29 |

I think the Canyon is alright, but I'd still take the Jeep. It's more fun.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:30 |

The Canyon would be a better commuter. The JK would be better for diversifying your fleet so you can scratch that four wheeling itch you’ve been having, and it will have better resale value for when you get bored of it.

His has the touchscreen with all of the generic apps. He mainly listens to audiobooks, and he can do that with Bluetooth. AA mostly gets in the way. And his commutes are normally an hour+ one way, so he’s spending some quality time in the cabin. 2019 provided a nicer screen, though.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:33 |

Wrangler.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:35 |

But the Wrangler won't plummet in resale valyoooos
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:36 |

#neither
But faced with the choice, the GMC. As an on road vehicle it’d be more useful and more comfortable . If the daily drive included a proper 4x4 trail then I’d reconsider...
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:36 |
|
The only reason I want AA is I drive all over the place and it would be nice having a really nice built in GPS program and to manage large amounts of incoming calls
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:38 |
|
I feel like the GMC will be less frustrating to live with, but the Wrangler will hold it’s value pretty much whatever you do with it .. It's a tough call.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:42 |
|
The AA freezes often in ours, I just end up using my data and Carplay instead. It’s that bad.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:42 |

FCA builds decent stuff now, GM does not.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:44 |

Pickup truck.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:45 |
|
But, as mentioned, I already own a truck (kinda)
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:47 |

As a commuter the sound of that top slapping in the breeze is going to get real old real fast. No AC would be a deal breaker for me too.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:49 |
|
I would likely buy a hard top. Also, the AC thing is no change from the Kia
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:51 |
|
That's why the Wrangler is a better short term vehicle. You can drive it for a few years, and sell it for damn near what you paid. When you keep a truck as long as I keep them, resale value is irrelevant.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:53 |

Around here it’s a necessity, plus it’s pretty nice.
I am sure jeeps are great for off roading, but I just can’t imagine spending a lot of time time in one.
Volvo is the answer.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 19:57 |

Don’t get one without AC. It doesn’t matter that the top comes off, no AC with the top off is still miserable when it’s 85°+ and you’re stopped at a light, or (god-forbid) stuck in traffic. Expect whatever you’re wearing to be soaked in sweat
You can add most features pretty easily, and generally do so with options that far exceed what was offered from factory. AC Is not one of those features.
Obviously if you have any desire to mod it a la The FiST go with a Wrangler. The GMC seems like a strange choice? You’ve already got a truck for *truck things* and the Kia seems to handle getting to/from jobsites alright , no?
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:02 |
|
Exactly. And that’s not a good reason to buy a JK.
It is the most off road of vehicles (so it drives and handles accordingly) and yet most people only ever commute in them. Why do sensible people buy such a specifically fit for purpose vehicle and then use it in a way that is not at all fit for purpose? We are a weird species.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:03 |

I would get the $35k GMC with 4 drs, v6 and 4wd.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:05 |
|
Whoa. I’m not rich
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:09 |

How about a car that is good at driving all over the place, instead of one that is miserable to be in driving all over the plan?
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:10 |

You hit the nail on the head. My dad’s had problems like that, too. I don’t get why people like AA and CarPlay so much.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:14 |
|
You make too much sense. I am of the opinion that all your vehicles should suck in at least 1 way.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:18 |
|
Totally, so get ken that sucks in a way besides driving all over the place. Get a Prius or a Civic Si, or literally anything else that isn’t a massive douche mobile.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:25 |

Carplay is fantastic, Android Auto is garbage. I’ve tried it on multiple phones now, and AA is just not good. Carplay works flawlessly though.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:29 |

I’m the iPhone of the household, and let’s just say it’s awesome that my RAV4 comes with Bluetooth streaming audio. I’m completely fine with that, though; a touchscreen would be more complex. Also, if something happened to the car, I wouldn’t lose the nice $500 screen....
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:30 |
|
Sadly I say Jeep cause of its resale value.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:31 |

I’d take the Canyon, I need A/C and I’m not buying a new car without it. I think it would drive better too.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:40 |
|
Ordinarly, I’d agree, but 2 door manual wranglers are typically driven by fairly grounded people. It’s the 4 door autos and whatnot you gotta look out for.
*hi dad!
![]() 06/07/2019 at 20:56 |

Thank you, sir.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 21:00 |

If you want a JK, I would look for a used JK for $15k or so. You already have a pickup and there’s no use buying a new JK for that much. That or get a TJ for even cheaper. Jeeps are built like shit (thanks Toledo!), but they’re easy and cheap to fix. The AK47 of 4x4s, if you will.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 21:03 |

Hey, some of us commute on our 47 year-old Honda motorcycles or fifty-three year-old GMC puckups and save our eight year-old Jeeps for the trails. Thank you very much!
![]() 06/07/2019 at 21:06 |

But this is our resident insurance guy, who has bought three new cars in the last four, five years.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 21:07 |

So even if it was broken, it would still be worth more.

I have a buddy at work with one of the Canyons, (I believe it is a 2017.) . It’s a mid grade (cloth seats) crew cab 4x4 with the 3.6 v6. He absolutely loves it so far. Honestly, I miss my 1990 Nissan Hardbody... I’d like a Toyota but holy crap are they expensive , I need to win the lottery...
![]() 06/07/2019 at 21:52 |

I think he loves that truck too much to use it for truck things.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 22:05 |

Right. I’m just saying I think he got the short term/long term reversed.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 22:22 |

Totally
![]() 06/07/2019 at 22:26 |

It would replace the kia (not that I'm buying one)

That just makes you 'special'!

Personally, if I wanted a pile of crap that was “capable” off road, I would just take a dump in my hiking boots.
Jeeps are garbage. 1. Because FCA. 2. Because how poorly they drive should be illegal. 3. Because a RAV4 is more capable than 99.9% of people will ever use and way better at literally everything that isn’t rock crawling. 4. Fisher Price interiors are great, if you’re 2 years old. 5. Fuck working on that shitty excuse for automotive “engineering”.
Not the canyonero either. Because 1. GM reliability isn’t far behind FCA. 2. Because it’s bigger than a 90's Silverado but it’s supposed to be mid-sized. 3. RWD truck in Canada? Come on bud. 4. Fisher Price really stepped up their game on this one and I’m glad they’re branching out from mini smart cars, but they’ve got a long way to go. 5. I can get to 60mph faster in shit filled hiking boots than this thing with a 4cyl.
